TINA’s Legacy: Free Money, Bread and Circuses and Collapse

Full Article: TINA’s Legacy: Free Money, Bread and Circuses and Collapse

By: Charles Hugh Smith

Every conventional “solution” to the systemic ills of our economy and society boils down to some version of free money: Universal Basic Income (UBI) schemes– free money for everyone, funded by borrowing from future taxpayers (robots, people, Martians, any fantasy will do); debt jubilees funded by central banks creating trillions out of thin air, a.k.a. free money, and so on.

Strengths

  • The best performing precious metal for the week was silver, climbing 2.36 percent and just beating out gold’s price performance as softer economic data emerged.
  • Gold traders and analysts are split on their outlook for gold, reports Bloomberg, with 12 bearish, three bullish and four neutral this week. On May 16 the yellow metal advanced for a fourth day, with Kotak Commodities Services saying gold is supported by “mixed U.S. economic data, weakness in the U.S. dollar, geopolitical tensions and uncertainty about Trump’s policy actions.” On the prior Friday, consumer prices (excluding food and energy) rose 1.9 percent year-over-year for April, the least since 2015, while retail sales were also weaker, reports Bloomberg.
  • Eldorado Gold will “gain an operating foothold in its own country with a deal to take full control of Integra Gold Corp,” reports Bloomberg, offering the equivalent of C$1.2125 for each Integra share. That is a 52 percent premium to Integra’s closing price on May 12, according to a statement on Monday from Eldorado. The proposed acquisition provides Eldorado with its first operating mine in Canada, offering G&A and income tax benefits, along with exposure to a lower political risk project, notes a Viii Capital report

If You Understand History And Economics, You Understand Gold

Full Article: If You Understand History And Economics, You Understand Gold

By: Egon von Greyerz

How can ordinary people ever understand the importance of gold when they are continuously fed with false and distorted facts. The latest publication to publish false and ignorant propaganda on gold is the British weekly magazine the Economist. The article begins with a graph of gold starting in September 2011. Anyone who knows anything about gold recognises that this is the time when gold reached a peak of $1,930. Between 1999 and 2011 gold had gone from $250 to $1,930 which is an increase of almost 700%. During the same period, the Dow was virtually unchanged and the UK index, the FTSE 100 was down 3%. So whilst gold was up 8x during those 11 years, stock markets were static but the journalist did not mention this. Instead, he starts the graph at the very top of gold after an 8 year rally.

The Looming, Big Catalyst For Gold

Full Article: The Looming, Big Catalyst For Gold

By: Jordan Roy-Byrne

Gold bulls were hopeful that Gold could break its 6-year downtrend but recent underperformance in the gold stocks and Silver argued otherwise. Those markets have been crushed in the past two weeks as US and global equities pushed higher. In fact, the S&P 500, small caps and global equity indices have rebounded back to recent highs and in some cases new highs. There is no arguing that equities remain in a bull market while precious metals (ex Gold but not for long) are again below their 200-day moving averages. History shows that bear markets in stocks have sprung major bull markets in Gold and gold stocks. The conditions for such are in place once again and only the timing is uncertain

Trump Deficits Will Be Huge

Full Article: Trump Deficits Will Be Huge

By: Peter Schiff

In the past half-century, Republican presidents have been the going away winners at the deficit derby, a fact that should make any true conservative blush. The sad truth is that annual deficits exploded under Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush, and generally contracted under Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. Some of the explanation is just luck of the draw, some walked into office in the midst of recessions they didn’t create. But the better part of the explanation is baked into the political dynamics.
